Breaking Waves: USM’s Innovative Approach to Mental Health Awareness

At Unity Ship Management (USM), we recognize that the well-being of our crew is not just a priority—it is fundamental to the success of our operations and the sustainability of our business. This February, we took a groundbreaking step toward fostering a healthier and more resilient workforce at sea with the launch of the “Well-being Onboard: Raising Mental Health Awareness Training Session.”

This pioneering initiative was designed specifically for our top four officers across 20 vessels, equipping them with the knowledge and tools necessary to support their teams and cultivate a culture of mental well-being onboard.

Pioneering Mental Health Training at Sea

Organizing live training sessions across 20 vessels and over 120 officers in just three days was an ambitious challenge. With ships in transit and officers spread across multiple time zones, coordination required meticulous planning and seamless execution.

Thanks to the dedication of our operational office team and the commitment of our crew members:

All officers confirmed their readiness to participate.

Training schedules were customized to accommodate different time zones and personal availability.

This initiative marked a major milestone for USM—a never-before-seen endeavour to conduct live mental health training while crew members remained onboard. #Starlink has proven to be a game-changing connectivity enabler for Unity Ship Management, directly contributing to the success of this initiative.

Guided by Expert Insight

Leading this training was a clinical psychologist from the IMEQ Centre, an expert in seafarers’ mental health. With a deep understanding of the unique pressures of life at sea, the trainer fostered an open, relatable, and engaging learning environment.

Insight from the Trainer:

“I was impressed by the eagerness of Unity’s crew members during our online mental health training. Conducting training online poses unique challenges compared to in-person sessions, especially in willingness to open up and engage in discussions. Unity stands out as one of the few companies that have successfully conducted such training onboard. I believe it will foster greater engagement with the topic and contribute to enhancing well-being onboard. By prioritizing mental health awareness, Unity not only enhances morale but also fosters a supportive workplace culture—a testament to their dedication to the welfare of their seafarers.” P.Robotis, Chief Psychologist

A Commitment to Crew Well-being

This initiative is just the beginning. USM remains committed to enhancing mental health support for all crew members, ensuring they feel valued, supported, and empowered to navigate the challenges of life at sea. By breaking barriers and embracing innovative training methods, we are not only raising awareness but also actively improving the lives of those who keep our industry moving.

Together, we sail stronger.
